ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gita Landwehr is an accomplished artist in many mediums. Her works, which have been shown in many solo and group exhibitions in the US and in Europe, include oil paintings, colored pencil drawings, multi-media collages, prints and photographs. Throughout her artistic career, she has been working in a variety of different styles. These include mandala art, representational works with a touch of "metaphoric" surrealism and totally abstract creations. Most recently, Gita has also added gourds to her repertoire of artistic expression:

"It is fascinating to transform these creations of nature into art. To me, gourds evoke a feeling of something very ancient, and at the same time their shapes easily connect with modern art. Nature creates gourds in an endless variety of unique sculptural forms with vessel-like qualities. Each one has grown into its own unique character, and that individuality influences my choice of techniques and what type of art object it will become. I carve my gourds, dye them, pyroengrave them with subtle patterns, or cut them into pieces and reassemble them in unusual ways. I paint them with designs which either develop spontaneously or follow specific, preconceived ideas. I combine and embellish them by using additional materials, until unique vessels, often with puzzle-like sculptural properties, emerge.

No matter how elegant, intricate or whimsical my gourd creations look in the end, for artist and viewer alike there will always be that certain element of awe and surprise which comes from the combined forces of nature and art."
